What is sea buckthorn oil?
Sea buckthorn oil is extracted from the berries of the sea buckthorn shrub - a plant native to the Himalayas which is used in traditional medicine for a range of disorders.
Modern research has shown sea buckthorn oil contains a unique source of biologically active substances and is one of the few natural sources of omega-7 polyunsaturated fatty acids.

How can sea buckthorn help with anti-ageing?
Over the years clinical studies have reported benefits of sea buckthorn oil with a range of conditions, including cardiovascular disease, liver disease, diabetes, gastric ulceration and wound healing - although it has never been fully understood how exactly it benefits these conditions.
However, the recent discovery shows the effect of sea buckthorn oil in mobilising stem cells. This is important for age-associated tissue degeneration as stem cells migrate to tissues that require repair in the body - something that is essential for normal maintenance and rejuvenation of healthy tissue as well as for repairing and healing damaged tissue.
In the recent clinical study by Drapeau et al, healthy volunteers were given an oral dose of 500mg of either sea buckthorn oil or placebo, and blood samples were taken after two hours for stem cell analysis.
Results showed that consumption of sea buckthorn oil resulted in a rapid mobilisation of stem cells, increasing the numbers of sub-types of stem cells in the circulation which is vital for the repair and regeneration characteristic of age-related degeneration of tissues.
