Conservative MP David Davis has been a vocal advocate of greater vitamin D supplementation and raised the issue at a recent session of Prime Minister’s Questions.
Mr Davis pointed to potentially promising results from a vitamin D supplementation programme in the Andalucia region of Spain.
Care home residents iand some GP patients n the region were given vitamin D supplements from November 2020.
Figures show that deaths from Covid-19 dropped in Andalucia from 187 per million in November 2020 to just 11 per million at the start of January 2021 – a drop of 82%.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson replied that the Government will continue to monitor all evidence about the efficacy of vitamin D.

An important part of that evidence is likely to be the results of the ground-breaking ‘Coronavit’ study being undertaken by Queen Mary University of London and supported by Pharma Nord.
Pharma Nord’s Bio-Vitamin D3 is being used for this clinical trial on the effects of vitamin D supplementation on the immune system and protecting against Covid-19.
The supplements are being taken by over 5,000 people for a period of six months, at the end of which scientists hope they will find out if correcting people’s vitamin D deficiencies over winter can reduce the risk and/or severity of Covid-19 and other acute respiratory infections.
Pharma Nord’s Bio-Vitamin D3 was chosen for the Coronavit study because of its long-established use in other clinical trials and a number of previously published studies which show Bio-Vitamin D3’s effectiveness and its ability to raise vitamin D levels in the blood.
