Pectin is a carbohydrate and polysaccharide with E-Number 440. It is found in in the cell walls of unripe fruits and vegetables, from which it can be extracted, concentrated, dried and made into a fine powder used as a stabiliser or thickener.
Pectin may be used in all foodstuffs containing additives. Pectin is broken down by intestinal bacteria, which is why pectin can also be found in fibre preparations. There is no legal limit to how much can be consumed.
Pharma Nord uses pectin extracted from apples to stabilise capsule material and from citrus peel.
