Ubiquinol CoQ10

Ubiquinol CoQ10 is Pharma Nord's Bio-Ubiquinol Active QH, containing coenzyme Q10 in its reduced form ubiquinol. Ubiquinol benefits may include elderly people or individuals with impaired digestion who may be less able to absorb supplemental coenzyme Q10 in its ubiquinone form.

Coenzyme Q10 is essential for the normal functioning of all tissues due to its role in the cellular energy production process. Both heart and skeletal muscles have the highest energy requirements of all bodily tissues, and are particularly reliant on adequate Q10 as a result.

Why Pharma Nord Ubiquinol CoQ10?

  • Available in 30mg and 100mg in packs of 60 and 150 capsules
  • Bio-Ubiquinol Active is manufactured to pharmaceutical standards
  • Only ubiquinol coq10 formula with guaranteed stability
  • 100% nature identical – the same form as the body produces
  • Oil-based formulation for optimum absorption
  • Gluten Free / Lactose Free / Soy Free / Yeast Free / Sugar Free

Coenzyme Q10 occurs naturally within every cell in the human body, we cannot live without it. It is a vitamin-like substance which is found in our mitochondria (specialised structures within cells responsible for energy production), it is also important as an antioxidant, associated with various health benefits.

Q10 - Mitochondria Path

Approximately three quarters of the body's Q10 is manufactured within the liver. Small amounts of coQ10 can be obtained from food. Our Q10 levels peak between the ages of 20 and 25. As the body's ability to manufacture/absorb Q10 declines with age, our levels of Q10 will also decline. Dietary supplementation can help to maintain optimal levels of coenzyme Q10 within the body.

Ubiquinone CoQ10 and Ubiquinol CoQ10

Coenzyme Q10 occurs in two forms;

Ubiquinone (Oxidised CoQ10)

Pharma Nord's Bio-Quinone Active Q10 - contains ubiquinone in its natural identical form. Most people are able to absorb supplemental coenzyme Q10 in this form adequately.

Ubiquinol (Reduced CoQ10)

Pharma Nord's Bio-Ubiquinol Active QH - contains coenzyme Q10 in the ubiquinol (reduced) form. This form may be beneficial for people with impaired digestive function.

Ubiquinone CoQ10 CapsuleUbiquinol CoQ10 Capsule
Normal Q10 is a clear orange, yellowish substance.Reduced Q10, is oxidatively unstable, has a milky-white colour appearance.

Note: A good way to test products with ubiquinol coQ10 is to pierce the capsule/soft gel and squeeze out its contents. If it is white, it is ubiquinol. If it is yellow, it has been transformed to ubiquinone.

Pharma Nord's Ubiquinol benefits is a strong antioxidant that helps support the body with replenishing low levels of coenzyme Q10. Ubiquinol coQ10 is extremely sensitive to the effects of air and light. Dietary supplements with ubiquinol have one drawback; ubiquinol oxidizes once it's exposed to oxygen and thereby returns to its original form, ubiquinone. Via a unique patented process, we have succeeded in encapsulating the raw material in a way that allows it to remain in its reduced form. Our patented soft gel capsules protect Bio-Ubiquinol Active QH from light and oxidation to deliver the coQ10 in its intended form inside your body.

Pharma Nord is able to guarantee the stability of this product during the whole of the product shelf life.

Inferior brands of coenzyme Q10 sold in tablet form and in jars cannot guarantee the bioavailability of the active ingredients within.

Q10 Quality

The raw material is produced by specialized yeast cells and is identical to the coenzyme Q10 produced by the body. In contrast to bacteria-fermented Q10, this yeast-fermented Q10 does not contain any yeast components or impurities of unknown nature. The raw material is completely free of harmful cis-isomers, often found in cheap synthetic Q10 raw materials of low quality. All raw materials used in the Bio-Ubiquinol Active QH undergo extensive quality control before production.

Using a special manufacturing technique the Q10 crystals completely dissolve at body temperature. It is this complete solution of Q10, a high quality raw material and manufacturing according to the pharmaceutical and the GMP protocol.

Q10 is a fat-soluble substance which is difficult for the body to absorb. However, thanks to a highly specialized manufacturing process where coQ10 is suspended in an oil matrix and exposed to a patented heating process, the Q10 crystals are able to dissolve entirely into a single molecule at normal body temperature.

Unprocessed Q10Q10 Inferior PreparationQ10 Heating ProcessQ10 Body Temperature
Unprocessed Q10, which has not been subjected to any pre-treatment, has a crystal form that hinders effective absorption. An inferior preparation is more like a mixture of Q10 crystals and oil, resulting in poor bioavailability of the active Q10.A special heat process that transforms the molecular structure of Q10 from rough crystals to a snow-flake like shape. At body temperature, the snow-flake Q10 dissolves, thus forming a uniform (homogeneous) mixture that the body can easily absorb.

We recommend the following…

Bio-Ubiquinol Active QH 30mg: 1-3 capsules per day or as directed by a physician.

Bio-Ubiquinol Active QH 100mg: 1-3 capsules per day or as directed by a physician.

Note: It is not only the formulation of the preparation that determines how much Q10 the body absorbs. It also depends on the dose and the dose intervals. (FAQ – Dose and Dosage)

No adverse effects or contra-indications reported from Ubiquinol CoQ10.

Studies show that even if you take coenzyme Q10 dietary supplements for an extended length of time it does not affect the body's endogenous production of the compound. Some studies have used doses of 1200mg daily without any problems.  More than 20 years of science support the use of Pharma Nord's Q10.

Ubiquinol is produced naturally within young and healthy bodies. Therefore, it’s recommended that men and women over the age of 40 should consider taking an ubiquinol CoQ10 supplement.

If taken as recommended ( 1-3 capsules per day):

  • 60 capsules – 20 day supply (based on 3 capsules per day)
  • 150 capsules – 50 day supply (based on 3 capsules per day)

You can cut a small hole in the soft gel capsules with a pair of scissors and squeeze the content of the capsule out onto a spoon or directly into your mouth. However, a small residue of Q10 will remain on the inside of the capsule using this method.

Dose and Dosage:

Our needs for coenzyme Q10 are individual.

  • Healthy young people have no need for supplementation of Q10.
  • Healthy adults should take maybe 30-60mg daily.
  • Elderly people could take maybe 100mg daily.
  • People in therapeutic treatment have been given up to 300mg daily - occasionally even more than that.

Since Q10 is fat-soluble substance, it is important to take it with a meal that contains some fat. The effect is observed after a short-term use and is felt most acutely approx. 6 hours after ingestion. Therefore, coQ10 should most effectively be taken with breakfast, perhaps lunch. If you take more than 1 capsule of ubiquinone per day, the absorbability will be larger if you spread the dose throughout the day - i.e. 1 capsule at breakfast and 1 capsule at lunch time.

Furthermore, you can take a supplement of the amino acid carnitine, which interacts closely with Q10 in the cells' mitochondria. Carnitine helps with the transport of fatty acids into the mitochondria, and Q10 is involved in the oxidation process that converts these fatty acids into energy in the form of ATP.

Q10 Ubiquinone Graph - SupplementationCoenzyme Q10 is generally considered a safe substance.

Long-term studies of more than 5 years, as well as studies with daily doses, have shown that it is safe to take supplements of coenzyme Q10 for a long period.

After discontinuation of supplementation, the body's Q10 level will return to the same level as before the start of supplementation. This shows that Q10 supplementation does not affect the body's own own production of the substance.

Q10 Ubiquinone and Q10 UbiquinolCoenzyme Q10 is best known for its oxidised form ubiquinone, introduced in Europe shortly after 1990. Globally, ubiquinone has also been the only form of Q10 whose effect has been documented in scientific studies. Ubiquinol, the reduced form of coQ10, was first brought to market in 2006. Since then, ubiquinol has been marketed as active Q10 although it is not more active than ubiquinone. Almost all documentation on the prevention and treatment of Q10 deficiency states have been performed with ubiquinone.

At the molecular level, ubiquinol coQ10 has two extra hydrogen molecules and forms, in conjunction with oxygen, and so-called hydroxyl group on the head of the Q10 molecule, which is a quinone ring. The two forms of Q10, however, have quite different roles in the body. Ubiquinol donates electrons, whereas ubiquinone receives electrons. Ubiquinol performs an important function as an antioxidant in the body, but in the cells' energy producing mitochondria, the two forms constantly switch from the one form to the other - that is, from the oxidised to the reduced and back again. Thus, one cannot say that one form of coenzyme Q10 is more active or more important than the other.

Appearance differences can be seen below, it is therefore easy to test whether the product you buy is normal or reduced Q10. The Q10 that we produce in the body's cells is oxidised Q10, whereas 90-95% of Q10 circulating in the blood is in the form of reduced Q10.

Ubiquinone (Oxidised Q10)Ubiquinol (Reduced Q10)
Ubiquinone CoQ10 CapsuleUbiquinol CoQ10 Capsule

Normal Q10 is a clear orange, yellowish substance.

Reduced Q10, is oxidatively unstable, has a milky-white colour appearance.

Finally, Q10 ubiquinol preparations are usually more expensive to buy than Q10 ubiquinone preparations.

It is possible to increase the body's own production of coenzyme Q10 by exercising and by optimizing the intake of nutrients.

The cell's production of Q10 is a complex process involving many biochemical steps. In order for the body to produce coQ10, there is a need for a vitamin B complex, vitamins C and E, selenium, magnesium and several trace elements. A lack of one or more of these nutrients will affect the body's Q10 production considerably. An increase in available Q10 in the body will usually be larger with the aid of even a small daily supplement of coQ10.

Cereal products usually contain coenzyme Q9, whereas soybeans contain some  coenzyme Q10. There is also some Q10 in walnuts, almonds, oil-rich fruits and green vegetables, especially spinach. Furthermore, fish contains Q10, especially sardines, which contain twice as much Q10 as beef. Even so, one would have to eat one pound of sardines, two pounds of beef, or 2.5 pounds of peanuts in order to get 30mg of Q10. Typically, there is somewhere between 5-10mg of Q10 in the food we eat on a daily basis. Most individuals probably get around 5mg a day.

To date, more than 40 scientific studies have been published, showing that, once the ubiquinone form of Q10 has been absorbed, it has a good bioavailability and efficacy. However, not much evidence has been published on the bioavailability and efficacy of QH (ubiquinol).

Various Q10 products are available either as tablets or capsules. The Q10 content may be in the form of crystals or granules, encapsulated in lipsomes, in micelles attached to nanoparticles or dissolved in oil.

The size alone of the coQ10 molecule (approx. 5.5nm long and 864 times heavier than a hydrogen atom) means that Q10 is basically not an easily absorbed substance. The coenzyme Q10 raw material is an orange brown crystalline powder, and these Q10-crystals cannot be absorbed directly into the body. The absorption of unprocessed Q10 is less than 1%. In water-soluble, but doing so will make the big Q10 molecule even bigger, whereby the advantage disappears, and the Q10 complex will still largely be fat-soluble. It sounds impressive to state that a Q10 product is three times more absorbable than a competing product, but if the competing product simply consists of Q10 crystals with a less than 1% absorption rate, the claim is not particularly impressive. Producers of Q10 supplements have to treat the Q10 raw material in a special way in order to achieve an effective absorption. The most bioavailable coQ10 products are dissolved in a vegetable oil in which the crystals must be dissolved completely.

Most people will experience an effect of Q10 supplementation, either directly or indirectly. Many so-called energy-based products get their effect from caffeine and caffeine-like substances from various plants that stimulate the adrenal glands to secrete stress hormones. Coenzyme q10, on the other hand, is present in all body cells and is part of the cells' natural way of producing energy. Thus, the biochemical processes in the body and the experience are not the same for these two different types of products. The fact that you may not feel an immediate effect of Q10 may also be due to one or more of the following factors:

  • You are taking a Q10 product with low bioavailability
  • You take your Q10 between meals and not together with fat
  • You have reduced fat absorption from the gut
  • You are so young that your Q10 level is still high
  • You are taking medicines that reduce the body's own production of Q10 to a degree that requires a higher compensatory Q10 dosage
  • You take Q10 for supper and will therefore only experience the maximum level in the blood at night while you are sleeping (it takes approx. 6 hours from ingestion until Q10 enters the blood)
  • You need more time. It can take a month or longer before the body's tissues are sufficiently saturated with Q10
  • You need a higher dose

The body produces Q10 on its own and because there is Q10 in almost any diet, it is seemingly impossible to categorize supplementation with Q10 as doping.

Q10 acts as a coenzyme (supporting enzyme) in the cells and thus also in the muscles' energy production mitochondria. We can produce some Q10 in the liver, and, in addition we get minor amounts of Q10 from the diet. Many athletes do take supplements of Q10 to counteract declining Q10 levels, and the Q10 supplements are not categorised as doping.

Safety Documentation: Pharma Nord's Q10 has been tested by the Hungarian Doping Institute for possible doping-like effects and can provide a certificate attesting to its Q10's lack of doping properties.

Relative to the food we eat, the size of individual nutrients are actually incredibly small. As a result, we need to use units other than grammes (g) to describe them. Here's what the common units for nutrients are:

Grammes (G)- often used to describe nutritional powders. Most teaspoons of powder weigh approximately 5g.

Milligrams (Mg)- 1000mg is equal to 1g

Micrograms (Mcg or μg)- 1000μg is equal to 1mg

International Units (IU)- Slightly more complex than milligrams (mg) and micrograms (μg), International Units measure differently from nutrient to nutrient. The most common nutrients that are likely to be measured in IU are vitamins D, E and A.

    • Vitamin D: 1 IU is the equivalent of 0.025 μg of D2 or D3
    • Vitamin A: 1 IU is the equivalent of 0.3 mcg retinol
    • Beta-carotene (provitamin A): 1 IU is the equivalent of 0.6 μg of beta carotene
    • Vitamin E: 1 IU is the equivalent of 0.67 mg d-alpha-tocopherol

    Q10 and Statins:

There is now a great deal of evidence from scientific studies on the consequences of this effect. The type of medication in question is commonly referred to as "statins".

Statins are a class of cholesterol-lowering drugs that act by inhibiting the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which reduces the body's production of the substance mevalonate. From mevalonate, several substances are formed in the liver, including cholesterol and Q10. You cannot lower the body's cholesterol production in this way without also lowering its production of coQ10.

There are different types of statins working in different ways, and they are not equally strong. The most common complaint about the adverse effects of statins is muscle pain. The pain occurs when the muscles have to work with too little energy. However, not everybody experiences adverse effects from statins. The effect differs from individual to individual depending on how much Q10 is required to normalize the body's Q10 level during statin treatment.

You must monitor your own body's needs.

    Andrea Phipps - 26th July 2017:

I started taking this product a couple of years ago and i can't be without it now. I've suffered from ME for a number of years and this is the only thing I've tried to give me more energy.

    John Farrell - 22nd December 2015:

I decided to start taking CoQ10 largely because I was on so much medication for my diabetes and blood pressure. I was concerned that my age and the medication were both interfering with my body's ability to generate CoQ10, so I decided to be proactive about it and went on 300 mg/day of Ubiquinol. I no longer feel as tired. I have a lot more energy. My mouth feels better, with no gum disease. I am sure that the CoQ10 has helped lower my blood pressure to some extent and my leg cramps have improved too. I feel that my natural immunity has been boosted and that will be due to the ongoing antioxidant action of the CoQ10. My cholesterol is well controlled with not a statin in sight. I feel a lot happier about my heart in respect of a reduced likelihood of cardiac events resulting from diabetes.

    Joan Freeman - 17th August 2015:

Q10 for me has been like a miracle. I was born with a hole in my heart. I went from being told there was nothing that could be done for me as I was too complicated to where I am now. As a nine year old child my parents were told that I would be in a wheelchair by the time I was 12 years of age and would most likely not reach 21 without heart surgery which in 1955 was in its infancy. I believe I was the second in the UK to have an open heart operation. Here I am 70 years of age. I was told as a young married woman I must not entertain having children, I have three and my second pregnancy was twins. I suffered from breathlessness and tiredness but since taking Pharma Nord's Q10 this has improved. All I can say is I thank The LORD for the day I spoke to whoever it was I spoke to on the telephone from Pharma Nord in 2009.

    Rosemary Laidlaw - 17th April 2014:

Multivits has an excellent choice of vitamins and minerals. I swear by Pharma Nord's Ubiquinol version of Co Enzyme Q10. It is the most expensive of the Q10 range but there is a school of thought that as we age we need a product with the best absorbency. I prefer to believe this to be true hence I continue to purchase the product and was so relieved it was on a recent offer. My husband used to be on Statins which I used to give him Q10 to put back the enzyme that product took out. Finally after years of many battles with the medical profession, doctor's are finally seeing the true light re that medication.

    Lian Renaud - 24th May 2013:

I suffered from muscle and back pain for many years. I was then prescribed statins, which caused muscle paralysis and muscle waste. Doctors advice was continue with the statins, thinking perhaps the doctor knew best I took one more tablet, I was horrendously ill and then had months of pain. My friend is a Treger practitioner recommended CO Q 10 Ubiquinol, I didn't fully believe the claims but I trusted my friend. Four and a half days later a lot of the pain lifted, and I slept through the nights.
Another friend had serious back pain and took CO Q 10 Ubiquinol, she is over the moon as four and a half days later most pain has gone. I was dubious as I saw many claims for wonder remedies, but I feel extremely lucky that I now have a future without the terrible pain I experienced for some three years or more. I am grateful to Treger and Pharma Nord. Pain curtails any enjoyment of life..........but now I have a lot of restored energy and hope......that's the best and least expected benefit ever. I recommend Both Treger and Pharma Nord CO Q 10 unreservedly.

    Miles - 18th April 2013:

I am 54 and a few years ago a virus affected my heart muscle and I collapsed during a hospital exercise test at heart rate 130 bpm and was told by a consultant cardiologist not to exercise. I am now recovered and have been taking 100mg Q10 Ubiquinol daily for 18 months which gives me the energy to walk long distances, run competively, and play tennis. I also now row competively and the Concept 2 ergos (rowing machines), which don't lie, tell me that my energy and fitness levels compare with club members 20 years younger! I know that the extra energy comes from the daily 100mg Ubiquinol Q10, and it also lowers my blood pressure. I can't rate this product highly enough. With many supplements you can't feel the difference - with Ubiquinol Q10 you really can. I ran 4.5 miles this morning at 70% of my max heart rate and am just off to the rowing club for UT1 ergo training! I would not be without Ubiquinol Q10.

    Keith Sheriff - 18th April 2013:

I was recommended ubiquinol BioActive Q10 by a health professional for my heart. I can't tell if its doing anything great for my heart but I was shocked when my gums stopped bleeding (they have bled all my adult life). When I went to see my dentist they were amazed how good my gums were looking too. On top of all that I have more energy and am not as fatigued as I used to be. So all in all I say go for it and give them a try - you owe it to yourself to at least try them and see.
