Is your job making you vitamin D deficient?

Now, a group of scientists have taken it one step further by questioning whether occupation should be taken into consideration when issuing guidelines for vitamin D supplementation. According to their review study of vitamin D status and occupation, shift workers, health care workers and indoors workers are at a particularly high risk of becoming vitamin D deficient.


Huge deficiency problems

The research was headed by Dr. Sebastian Straube from the University of Alberta in Canada and concluded that vitamin D levels in most occupational groups are lower than what is considered optimal for maintaining good health.

By systematically analysing 71 peer-reviewed articles including more than 53,000 individuals, Straube and his team found that vitamin D deficiency problems were most common among shift workers (80%), indoor workers (77%), and health care students (72%).


Better preventive efforts

The researchers also revealed that a high percentage of indoor workers (91%) had insufficient vitamin D levels, which meant that their levels of the nutrient were not critically low but lower than levels recommended for maintaining good health. The researchers believe that their findings could make it easier to promote a healthier lifestyle and target the right preventive efforts for at risk groups in the future.
